The garden I was given to keep
Of everything we make, Island Rose is the most personal.
In the Caribbean I grew up in, roses seemed to be everywhere. Almost every grandmother had a rose garden, and mine was no exception.
Every Saturday morning, that garden was mine to keep. I didn’t choose the chore, but over time it became a ritual, then a memory, and eventually — though I would not have known to call it this then — my first education in one of the great materials of fine perfumery.
Many of our fragrances begin with the Caribbean. This one begins in a particular garden, on a Saturday morning, with my grandmother nearby.
If you were raised in the Caribbean and spent your Saturdays at your grandmother’s, I suspect you already know exactly what this smells like.
